Head-to-Head: Subaru BRZ vs. Hyundai Genesis Coupe
July 18th, 2013 by Road Test TV
Just the other day we put together a list of the top 10 sports cars you can purchase for under $30,000. The Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S and the Hyundai Genesis Coupe both made the list. The argument can be made that the Subaru BRZ and the Hyundai Genesis Coupe are both fairly to the under $30,000 sports car list so we decided to pin both together in our latest Head-to-Head post to see who comes out on top.
The Hyundai Genesis Coupe, coming out of Korea, made its official debut in 2008 while the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S are brand new to the mix, coming straight from Japan.
Let’s take a look at how both stack up against each other.
Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec:
- Power: 3.8 liter V6 – 348-hp at 6,400 rpm and a peak torque 295 lb-ft at 5,100 rpm.
- Transmission: 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic.
- 0 to 62 mph: 5.2 seconds.
- Top Speed: 155 mph.
- Price: $28,750.
Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0 T:
- Power: 2.0 liter V6 – 274-hp at 6,000 rpm and a peak torque 275 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm.
- Transmission: 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic.
- 0 to 62 mph: 7 seconds.
- Top Speed: 155 mph.
- Price: $28,750.
Subaru BRZ:
- Power: 2.0 liter 4-cylinder boxer engine – 200-hp at 7,000 rpm with a maximum torque of 151 lb-ft at 6,600 rpm.
- Transmission: 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic.
- 0 to 62 mph: 6 seconds.
- Top Speed: 143 mph.
- Price: $25,255.
So there you have it. The Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec takes the crown when it comes to power and performance, while it costs about 4,000 more than the Genesis Coupe 2.0T and the Subaru BRZ. However, you get a ton of more performance for that extra $4,000 so it’s basically up to you to see what package fits your budge. While the Subaru BRZ is a great looking card and is a true sports car from Japan, Hyundai does offer quite a strong competitor with its Genesis Coupe.
