In our last article, we spoke about an upcoming Jaguar – an SUV that will compete with the likes of the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLK. It seems like Jaguar is finally focused on expanding its currently thin lineup which consists of the, Jaguar XJ, XF, XK and the new F-Type.

Before a Jaguar SUV ever sees the light of day, the British automaker will bring a smaller sedan to the market that will compete with the likes of the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. However, it remains to be seen whether or not Jaguar’s new baby sedan could dethrone the popular 3 Series and C Class, which are top-sellers in the U.S. and UK market.

According to inside sources, Jaguar will attempt to bring strong competition to the German market by emphasizing its lightweight aluminum construction, cutting-edge design, and frugal 4-cylinder engines.

“Trying to find a gap to exploit is a real challenge,” said Jaguar’s global brand director, Adrian Hallmark in an interview with AutoCar. “Nobody is waiting for another competitor to enter a segment. For us to enter, we need to have a winning proposition. It has to have a twist, something relevant to the consumer. But the Jaguar brand should define everything.”

Hallmark went onto say that a competitors to the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C Class will also fill in a full line-up of body variants including coupes, convertibles and station wagons. “You have to be flexible in that segment,” said Hallmark.

Also, let’s not forget that the architecture of the new baby sedan will also underpin the SUV.

In our opinion, a Jaguar competitor to the 3 Series and the C- Class is a must for the British brand to compete with its German rivals.
