McLaren MP4-12C

McLaren Automotive took the world by storm in 2011 with the debut of the MP4-12C coupe, which went onto win numerous awards. After the debut MP4-12C Coupe, McLaren released a convertible version of the MP4-12C to keep the buzz going. Making the biggest bang yet, McLaren recently unveiled the McLaren P1 – a successor to the one of the most amazing supercars of our time, the McLaren F1. So how do you top that? You kind of don’t.

Now that people have seen the best from McLaren, the automaker will tap into a lower-price point market. That’s not to say that McLaren’s upcoming project will be a cheap sports car. The new model will just compete with the likes of the Porsche 911 with hopes of increasing sales by moving volume.

McLaren has goals of introducing one new model or variant of an existing model per year between now and 2015, with hopes to take annual production to 4,500 units.

The Porsche 911 competitor, known as the P13, will be powered by the same 3.8 liter twin-turbo V8 from the MP4-12C making 600-hp. However, McLaren will also offer a detuned version for an entry-level model. Insiders say that 0-62 mph time of sub 4 seconds is the clear target with a top speed close to 200 mph.

When can we expect this Porsche 911 chasing McLaren? We would pin it around late 2014 with a convertible version to follow some time in 2015.

Let’s just hope that McLaren never goes into the SUV market like its competitors.
