Compact coupe SUVs are becoming the new ‘it’ thing as of recently. At the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show earlier this month, Volkswagen debuted the new CrossBlue Coupe Concept.

Built on the Volkswagen MQB architecture, the CrossBlue Coupe Concept features a plug-in V6 gasoline-electric hybrid drivetrain making a combined 415-hp allowing it to go from 0 to 62 mph in 5.9 seconds. That’s sports car territory in our book.

While it may be a quick car, the Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe Concept is also quite fuel-efficient. The concept gets 21 miles in zero-emissions driving along with a combined fuel-economy of 79 mpg. Gasoline only fuel-economy comes in at 34.1 mpg. Total driving range comes in at a strong 720 miles.

“The disproportionate growth in the SUV segment gives designers the opportunity to implement an even greater diversification of models,” said Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design for the Volkswagen Brand. “The CrossBlue Coupé shows the potential of our Volkswagen design DNA and will undoubtedly have an influence on future SUV models.”

No word on when or if we will see a production version of the Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe Concept.
