Everybody knows the ZR1 as the Top Dog in the Corvette food chain. LS9 Supercharged V8..check; 638 horsepower ..check; Carbon Fiber body panels..check; Carbon Ceramic Rotors..check; Automatic Transmission..NO Check.  That was until Redline Motorsports got their hands on an adventurous customer’s car and dropped in a 4L60E automatic overdrive transmission.  Now you can get an automatic transmission in an ZR1 if you write a check to Redline Motorsports in South Florida. As you will see below, it’s worth it.

I know what you’re thinking .. Who would put an automatic transmission in a ZR1?  We know…a person who likes to drag race and consistently win, that’s who would do it.  Our experience at drag strips around the country is that most owners of ZR1 Corvettes have difficulty making a clean 1/4 mile pass.  Wheel spin and missed shifts are the norm rather than exception.  Add more power to the equation and the liklehood of a stellar 1/4 pass goes out the window for most. 

That said, the owner of the World’s First Corvette ZR1 with an automatic transmission is a capable driver; however, he likes drag racing and wanted more consistency along with more power.  Enter Redline Motorsports, one of the most respected late model tuning shops in the country. Howard Tanner of Redline welcomes unique projects and dropped the entire driveline out of this 2010 ZR1 to make the following mods: ported heads; ported blower; Comp Cam; American Racing 2 inch primary tube headers;  Injector Dynamics 1000 injectors; upper and lower pulleys. The result, 723 rear wheel horsepower and 692 rear wheel torque.

Now for the interesting part. Redline in conjunction with RPM Transmissions, also installed a special flywheel, torque converter and 4L60E overdrive automatic transmission to make this beast consistent. This is no small feat as there are no parts that are made for a ZR1 with an automatic trans, so everything had to be fabricated (flywheel, torque tube, etc).  In addition, the crew at Redline had to get the ZR1s computer to send the appropriate messages to the 4L60E transmission’s computer to make it shift.   

That said, Redline accomplished its goal beacuse last night, Redline laid down two (2) back to back 9.80 1/4 mile passes in the ZR1 auto.  Some haters may say an automatic trans in a ZR1 “just not right” or “sacrilege”; however, after what we witnessed last night we call it “bad ass”.     I don’t see the point on building a full out dragster based on the zr1, wouldn’t it be easier to start with cheaper base car?
