Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG vs BMW M6 Gran Coupe

When one sees a Mercedes-Benz CLS, one would think that it classifies as a sedan as there are obviously a total of four doors. However, Mercedes-Benz considers the CLS a coupe and we can prove it. Head over to www.mbusa.com and look under sedans and the Mercedes-Benz CLS is no where to be found. Look under coupes, and… there it is – sitting with a massive starting price tag of $72,100.

Since the original Mercedes-Benz was launched in 2004, other luxury automakers have launched their own four-door-coupe rivals with the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe being the most recent. Now, since Road Test TV is all about high-performance we decided to pin the top-of-the-line BMW M6 Gran Coupe against the new Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG in our latest Head-to-Head segment.

Let’s see how the new M6 Gran Coupe stacks up to the legend that started it all.

Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG:

  • Power: 5.5 liter biturbo V8 making 585-hp and 590 lb-ft of torque.
  • Transmission: AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission.
  • 0 to 62 mph: 3.6 seconds.
  • Top Speed: 155 mph (electronically limited).
  • Price: $95,900.

BMW M6 Gran Coupe

2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe:

  • Power: 4.4 liter TwinPower Turbo V8 making 560-hp and 502 lb-ft of torque.
  • Transmission: AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission.
  • 0 to 62 mph: 4.2 seconds.
  • Top Speed: 155 mph (electronically limited).
  • Price: $113,000.

So – there you have it. If you were to go completely off the numbers, the Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG definitely offers more bang-for-your-buck. Not to mention, in our opinion at least, the Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG has a better design than the BMW M6 Gran Coupe. While the M6 Gran Coupe is a great looking sports car, the CLS63 AMG is just more ambitious and aggressive when its comes to styling and overall appeal. I think we have clear winner here.
