Hot News !! E63 AMG vs 2013 Tesla Model S – Drag Race Revenge Video – Road Test TV

February 4th, 2013 by Road Test TV

Tesla Model S vs E63 Drag Race By now, everyone has probably seen the video of the Tesla Model S Performance beating a Dodge Viper. You probably have also seen the video of the Tesla Model S Performance beating a Non-Performance Package Mercedes E63 to 70 mph. Well, the video below has a different outcome as the $100,000.00 Tesla Model S went head to head with a RENNtech tuned E63 BiTurbo, and finally lost a battle. However, considering that the Tesla is an all electric luxury sedan, losing to a 600 horsepower BiTurbo AMG Mercedes Benz isn’t too shabby.

The Tesla S can be ordered with with 3 different battery-pack options: 1) 40 kWh battery with a 160-mile range, 2) 60 kWh battery with a 230-mile range or 3) 85 kWh battery with a 300-mile range. The Tesla in the video has the 85 kWh option. The extended range for the Tesla is an incredible leap forward in Electric Vehicle (EV) technology as the base battery’s 160 mile range nearly doubles the highest range of any other EV on the market.

The chart topping rear wheel drive Tesla Model S with its 85 kWh battery is a very impressive performer by any standards. The $100,000.00 Model S Performance Package has an upgraded power inverter that produces 416 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. Recently, a Tesla S set the EV world record in the 1/4 mile with an elapse time of 12.3 seconds and a terminal speed of 110 mph. That same Tesla Model S has catapulted from 0-to-60 mph in 3.9 seconds.

In sum, it is clear that the future of electric cars is bright and performance enthusiast will be please with the acceleration a battery powered vehicle can offer.

Come on put a second gear in that tesla, even Dewalt drills have a second gear. If second gear kicked in about 60 mph with its torque it would kill that merc and probably get longer range on a charge. Tesla has plans in the future for a pick up truck, it better have a second gear.

Cool, but I’d still take the Tesla any day. Imagine when Tesla makes an AWD version with a motor powering the front wheels. If the 416 hp version can do 0-60 in 3.9 sec., what would a 624 hp (front motor half size like the Model X AWD) or 832 hp Tesla Model S do? Imagine a lightened, tuned “Black Series” Tesla!

With a second gear, or a small variable speed transmission the car would go faster with the same RPM. with the right gearing it could go 190mph, so these Mercs, and BMWs won’t catch it at the finish line. The lower RPMs would draw less electricity. What do you think Elon.

Freedom to not send your neighbors kid, or your own kid, off to fight a war to get electricity to come out of the wall, is icing on the cake.

Think how electricity demand will influence and stress infrastructure. Electric companies such as EON have already talked about raising the price for electricity and we are only at about 17,000 EVs in the world. There are 87 million cars in the world. There have been many industrial and technological advancements since MBs induction that the Tesla and E63 are both taking advantage of. but get your point. To go fast (not quick but fast) it takes one thing, POWER and the Tesla does not have a lot of it. To go quick it takes many other factors (traction, gearing, etc.) it’ll be a while before a Tesla will be able to run down a modded AMG benz. I’d still rather have the Tesla it’s the future, the benz is just a car with a big engine and big power

Electric cars have been around for over a century as well. What kept them back until quite recently was a lack in affordable battery technology. ICE filled the role of powering cars for a very long time because it was the best option. In the next few years many car manufacturers including Mercedes will be making pure electrics and considering the capital the major manufacturers have tesla will most likely either merge, be purchased, or go out of business.

A transmission will do nothing for the Tesla electric motor. The Torque curve is so flat, that shifting will only make it so the motor will spin slower, while giving the same amount of HP/Torque, and using the same amount of power from the battery. What it WILL do, is add a lot more points for mechanical failure, reduce the response time of your throttle, and rob you of a couple HP. Electric motors can spin at tens of thousands of RPM without a hiccup. There is no need for a transmission.

Nice attempt at a troll, but you didn’t read what I said. I never said gears do not multiply torque.

When you have the exact same torque at 0 RPM as you do at 15000 RPM and every speed in between, then adding a transmission will only steal power from your output.

ICE cars need a transmission because of their narrow powerband, and rev limit.

If you had tried to make the argument that he should re-gear the motor, I could agree, but a transmission that can shift would only make the car slower.

While it is true that reduction gearing does in fact multiply torque, you’re forgetting the internal drag that adding more components creates. By using solely and electric motor that produces its peak torque over the full power band 0-15000 rpms it negates the need for reduction gearing. Any improvements in torque would be lost in power due to drag and friction. Basically like why automatic’s generally have lower power, more unnecessary components.

Thats true. Nanaotechnology will give us the tool we need, to produce high energy batteries en masse for cheap. IBM has an interesting project they call “Battery 500”. They use Lithium-air batteries which are far superior to todays lithium batteries. There are also other concepts which sound promising. Another alternative, as Elon Musk mentioned, may be ultracapacitors. But they are for the farther future.

I think Musk said that he expects gradual evolution of the existing battery chemistry, not something new. And you don’t really need such a revolution for electric cars to compete in the mainstream. The lithium–air battery you mentioned is an old technology that still hasn’t produced a practical product. It’s quite likely that it’s not going to be a major player in the next 40 years either.

Tesla didn’t get here by acquiring revolutionary batteries. They just used existing tech in a clever way.

Elon Musk has stated that even improving on existing technologies such as the very Li Ion cells his cars use will make a stronger case for electric cars. Just an improvement of say 30% to 40% more energy density would enable a car like the Model S to surpass 400 miles of driving range on a single charge. That would be significant.

So, gas cost more than electricity and you have to rely on big oil. Easy solution, just put a bigger motor in to the Tesla and it will smoke the Mercedes. Anyway you look at it combustion engines are incredibly inefficient and from the motor to the wheel the loss of power high, not to mention many things break down and you have to spend money changing the fluids in the car. Why do you think High Speed Trains use electric motors instead of gasoline or diesel. Stop living in the past.

How many times can you mash the throttle and drop the clutch on that Benz before it heads to the shop? The achilles heel for ICE’s is the enormous cost it takes to build & maintain an engine capable of keeping up with a performance electric. Battery tech gets better every year. Teslas will get cheaper and faster while cars with high performance ICE’s get way too expensive.

Some day we will understand how stupid we were when aircrafts can’t fly anymore because of your kind of attitude. A B747-300 fully loaded consumes some 3,000 gallons of fuel per hour. That is incorrect. CO2 emissions for EV cars depends on how the electricity is produced. EV cars on average clearly reduces the accumulated CO2 emission. An ICE 30mpg car emit around 29 tons of CO2 over 100,000 miles from the gas burned. Depending on location, the EV car leads to different CO2 emissions. State CO2 emissions per kWh vary greatly in accordance with the amount of clean energy in the energy supply e.g. Vermont is at 0.0055 lbs/kWh while North Dakota: 2.0685 lbs/kWh.

Only time will tell if the Tesla is successful. Sounds great on paper. Where it will fail miserably its in resale value. Basically this is a 10 year shelf life car (the life span of their best battery). After that, the car is basically useless unless you are willing to pay another 12000-15000 for a battery swap. Yes you saved yourself gas money on the front end but will pay for it on the back end. Maintenance cost will be high due to specialized mechanics. Maybe in 50 years when cost are lower.

There will be no gas for cars, trucks, boats, airplanes in about 80 years(probably less as China increases its fuel consumption). Electric transportation will be the necessary future like it or not. Cars electric. Trains electric. Trucks electric. Ships coal or nuclear. Airplanes, grounded.

So a car with one forward gear built for US roads needs to continue accelerating hard over 110mph why? Even if it was cruising the Autobahn in Germany… most cars are doing 70-75 or so. If you are doing 100-110 you are blowing past 99% of the rest of traffic and probably causing a hazard, btdt at over 200mph when I was young and dumb and got my hands on a Ruf Ladybird Porsche for a test drive back in the mid 80’s.

Probably just a fanboy and with good reason. With the motor driving the rear axles directly, the odds are you could drag race that for year after year pulling mid 12’s and never break anything. While I was burning up $50-$100 in fuel for an average drag race day, the Tesla owner is probably well under $3. At the end of the run, he isn’t working the brakes either… just let the regen slow you down and put some juice back in the battery pack.. no wear or tear.

I’m well aware of that. But at least what he’s doing with Tesla and Space X AND Solar City are ALL based here in the states. So while he may be South African, he obviously feels that the U.S. is the place to do his business. And with as much as he’s contributed to the American economy and workforce, I’d say that makes him worthy of an “honorary” American citizenship, If there were such a thing. But that’s just my opinion.

Absolutely. One would certainly expect the Tesla to get better gas mileage. However, the video is of a drag race. I am not certain gas mileage is a major concern. If it were, those drag car racers that operate on 114 octane race fuel are probably upset that they are spending $300 on your 60 mile benchmark.

So an aftermarket tuned AMG that gets 16mpg can outrun the Tesla Model S in
the 1/4 by a second… cool. The Tesla gets about 100mpge and has about a
300 mile range. The AMG has a 21 gallon gas tank (and uses super?) which
will get it about 40 miles further than the Tesla… assuming it isn’t
caught in traffic jams in which case, the Tesla will probably go further on
a ‘tank’. Fuel per tank… Tesla “Free” on the highway if it fills up at a
Tesla Supercharger station, otherwise about $6 where I live (6.5 cents a
KW). AMG Mercedes… 21 x $3.79 (price I just filled my Regal GS up at,
was $4.29 a couple of months ago)… so about $80. If you are a high buck
suit driving up and down the freeways, you might get 485 miles to a tank…
good range on a freeway. Of course no one needs that amount of power, but
yes, it spanks the Tesla in the 1/4 mile with it’s extra 200+ horsepower on
tap when called upon. I’ve driven over 200mph on the Autobahn in Germany
between Ramstein and Saarbruchen in an old Ruf Porsche… not a car I’d
want to drive everyday. I think I’d want to drive the Tesla everyday and
take the long winding way home.
